About Therapy
Starting counselling or psychotherapy can be seen as a very big step to take and it is important to find someone that you feel comfortable to talk to. It can feel strange at the beginning of counselling to sit and tell a stranger about yourself, your life and your problems, feelings or things concerning you. Having counselling sessions provides a safe, confidential and non-judgemental place to talk and can help make sense of life and feelings.
Counselling sessions are 50 minutes long and are usually on a weekly basis. I am also qualified to work with clients more frequently if it may be helpful to do so. The therapist doesn't set any agenda, the time in a therapy session is used to explore whatever the client or patient brings. This could include the things happening in your life now, past experiences, thoughts, feelings, or dreams. Dreams arise from our unconscious and we may sometimes wake up and wonder "what was that all about?" The unconscious has an impact on us, but we may not realise. We can tend to repeat patterns of behaviour, which may be very detrimental for us and it can be very helpful to think about this together.
Therapy is a journey that we go on together as we explore in your sessions. I work in a psychodynamic and psychoanalytical way, which looks at how past experiences including trauma, childhood, our adult life and our unconscious can affect the present and why we may have certain patterns of behaviour, that we sometimes repeat.
Therapy provides a reliable and confidential relationship. Working with a skilled therapist can help you to understand how past experience, concerns about the future or lack of confidence or self esteem may be affecting your life. As your therapist I would not be giving advice but by helping you to explore your thoughts and feelings would help you make your own choices.
At your 1st counselling session I will ask you about yourself, explore some past history including childhood and what brings you to counselling. We would also discuss what are your hopes and expectations from counselling. This session is also an opportunity to see how it feels talking to me and ask any questions you may have before deciding whether you want to continue with counselling. We would also discuss your fee for ongoing weekly sessions.
I can be contacted by phone on 07531082295; if you reach my voicemail please leave your phone number and times when you will be available for me to call you back. You can also make your initial contact by through the contact form providing your phone number and convenient times for me to call you. I am the only person who has access to either so your contact will remain confidential.
